Maddie Jo at the 2025 Ida Lewis

Posted Sep 15, 2025

After a year of hanging on the wire and crewing the C420, I wanted to start getting experience skippering the C420 and felt that the 2025 US Junior Women’s Doublehanded Championship clinic and regatta was the place for me to jump in and start.

The first few days of the clinic were awesome—I had the opportunity to learn from a group of strong female college coaches and was surrounded by other very competitive and experienced women sailors.

Olivia Norton at the C420 North American Championships

As a competitive double-handed racer, I went to the East Coast for C420 North Americans. More specifically, the regatta was in Bellport, New York. The regatta was run incredibly by Seville Yacht Club, and the wind was light in contrast to North Americans last year. Coming from Southern California light wind is a speciality, so my skipper Kingston Keyoung and I were able to do well in comparison to East Coast boats with less light-air practice. However, all competitors were exceptional sailors, and the winning boat had both a skipper and crew from the east coast. With such impressive sailors from around the country North Americans became a fun and competitive regatta for everyone. In total, it was a 116 boat fleet. After the first two days of flight selection we raced in gold fleet for two more days, resulting in a four day regatta. Though the long regatta was tiring at times, it allowed Kingston and I to learn a lot. These things included how to navigate a course with unpredictable wind shifts, and adapt to Seville’s new electric mark bots, which were used to set the course. Overall, it was a fun and rigorous regatta, which allowed all competitors to gain more experience and knowledge.

Dave Perry describes it as the “Match Racing Bug”, and once you have it you can’t shake it. Since my first match race five years ago, I have had the bug. This summer I initially intended to do a few events, as I was participating in two finance internships and attending the London School of Economics, but when US Sailing gave me the US berth at the 2025 Youth World Match Race Championship, I decided to go all in.

Emerson Betz at the Junior Women’s Doublehanded Champs (Ida Lewis)

My first day of Ida Lewis was exciting, but also exhausting. It was the windiest conditions my crew and I had ever sailed and we found it to be very challenging. Our boat kept swamping but not flipping. A coach came over to us while everybody else was practicing and told us to flip the boat because that would help us get the water out.

Thank you to the Newport Harbor Sailing Foundation for helping support my sailing at the 2025 C420 South Shore Championship. This year, the regatta was on August 2-3 in West Sayville, New York. Bellport Bay Yacht Club hosted the event, but we sailed out of the Long Island Maritime Museum. My skipper, Carly Kieding, and I flew in on July 31 for one day of practice before the regatta.
