Oliva Norton at the CJ Buckley

Despite being a Junior in high school, this year was my first CJ Buckley, and it was definitely one of my favorite regattas I went to. This year, the races were in Warwick Rhode Island, and the races occurred over two days. My team consisted of no one I knew before the regatta, so it gave me the chance to make new friends, some of whom were also from Southern California! This regatta gave me the opportunity to sail C420s college style, (no spinnakers or trapezes) which allowed me to experience a little bit of what college sailing is like. Furthermore, CJ Buckley has a college night in which rising juniors and seniors can meet and speak with college coaches about recruitment. It is the Newport Harbor Sailing Foundation that makes these experiences and opportunities possible for so many sailors. Thank you so much for your support!

Olivia Norton at the Ida Lewis Trophy

Thank you so much to the Newport Harbor Sailing Foundation for supporting me for the Ida Lewis Regatta! This clinic and race was held in Norfolk, Virginia, and was breeze on during the four clinic days and incredibly light during the actual races. The racing lasted two days and despite the light air, my crew (Fiona Barbieto) and I had loads of fun. She did handstands on the trapeze, we made a raft up between boats, and did a photo shoot in our pink shirts during postponement. Racing on Saturday consisted of three races, and a lot of learning.

Olivia Norton at the 2025 C420 South Shore Championships

Posted Oct 28, 2025
Sailors: Olivia Norton |Kingston Keyoung

This year I attended the Southshore regatta in Bellport, New York. I crewed for Kingston Keyoung, and raced from August first to August Third. In contrast to my previous two regattas, this on was short and lower-stakes. While South Shore in a regional regatta, many sailors from across the country attended, because they were already on the East Coast from C420 Nationals. There is no flight selection in this regatta because it is smaller, so we were able to go straight into regular racing. My skipper and I improved a lot at this regatta in our starts, or more specifically in our crowded and high-stakes starts. This was due to the short course and small start line. Additionally, this regatta was the first time I had experienced mark bots, which are marks that drive themselves to the coordinates of where the race committee chooses to have their windward mark. These new marks could be the future of sailing and were so interesting to experience and get to see. Thank you so much for supporting experiences such as South Shore!

Olivia Norton at the 2025 C420 National Championships

I went to the 2025 C420 Nationals in Hyannis, Massachusetts for my second regatta of the summer. My skipper, Kingston Keyoung, and I began practice in Hyannis July 20th, and began racing the 21st. The first two days were flight selection, and the third was racing in our fleets. The practice day was windy, but for the first day of racing the wind had died off, allowing for a limited number of races the first day of flight selection. Kingston and I got top 10 However, the next day of flight selection the wind built, and we were able to get off more races. We improved on our close-quarters boat handling at the windward mark and our downwind tactics the first day. The next day of flight selection, Kingston and I secured our spot in the gold fleet, and continued with our top 20 scores. The last day of racing was the most fun I had in a while sailing, because the breeze was on, and the competition was some of the best. In the end, we ended up getting 29th overall in the regatta. It was not our best by any means, but the conditions and company made for an incredibly fun regatta. Thank you so much Newport Harbor Sailing Foundation for allowing me to compete in these high-level regattas!

Marbella Marlo at the U.S. Team Racing Championships

This past September, I competed at the U.S. Team Racing Championships in Larchmont, NY. This was my fourth time sailing with Los Huevos, a team that includes skippers Lachlain McGranahan, Justin Callahan, and Mitchell Callahan; and crews Libby Redmond, Sara Schumann, and myself. The connection we've formed as a team, as former college teammates and childhood friends, makes for a truly special team dynamic. The competition was tough, with talented teams from all over the country, but through consistent teamwork and communication, we were able to come out with the win for the third year in a row. It was an exciting and rewarding weekend that reminded me why I love team racing so much.

Maddie Jo at the 2025 Women’s C420 NA Championships

This was now my 2nd experience skippering on the east coast and first time sailing in Cape Cod. What an awesome venue and journey! 90-degree wind shifts, choppy waters, storm delays, and more experience with a big wind venue.

Overall, I finished a mid pack at 20 out of 47 sailors, which I was pleased with for my first time here. To me, the experience sailing at Wyanno YC and skippering showed me what worked well and where I needed to focus and improve to move up in the fleet.
