Piper Blackband at the 2023 CJ Buckley Team Race

Posted Sep 01, 2023

Thank you so much for your funding which allowed me to compete in Warwick, Rhode Island for the 2023 CJ Buckley. This regatta was one of the highlights of the summer. The camaraderie of our team working together against other teams really shows how great of a sport sailing is. Team racing is quite intense and heated in the moment but racing against your teammates and friends makes it so enjoyable.

Dylan Sih at the 2023 CJ Buckley Regatta

Thank you for your generous help in supporting my racing at the 2023 CJ Buckley in Warwick, RI. Team racing has always been my favorite kind of sailing and it was great to be back at this amazing event! Although our team had never actually team raced together before, we put in a ton of work during the practice days leading up to the event, and after two days and over 250 races, we ended up placing 4th out of 28 teams.

At the end of the first day of racing, we were sitting outside the final four, but still in touch with the top teams. So, after talking things through and sorting out our mistakes from day one, we  were feeling ready heading into the second day of racing. Racing resumed in swiss league format for the first few hours of the day, and in that time frame, we were able to bring up our record to tie with three other teams for fourth. Luckily, after a thorough discussion by RC, we ended up winning the tie break, placing us in the final four where we would race in the semis, then finals.

Dylan Sih at the 2023 South Shores Regatta

Thank you so much for your continued support of my sailing, which has allowed me to travel to Sayville YC in Blue Point, NY to compete in the 2023 South Shores Championship. After three days of racing, we ended up placing 13th out of 88 teams, and although we were aiming for better, we still had many high points throughout the event and were able to enjoy our time on and off the water.

We started off the first day safe but consistent, with all single digit scores for the first four races of the regatta. Furthermore, the wind had steadily built throughout the day, so by the last race, we had some super fun conditions which allowed us to fully plane around the whole course! My crew, Dillon Garcia, and I even switched spots on the sail in just for fun, and I happened to go flying around the front of the boat as we pitch-poled and flipped…

Thank you so much for your continued support of my sailing in allowing me to compete in the 2023 C420 North Americans at Sail Newport in Rhode Island. Albeit a more difficult and disappointing regatta results-wise, I still gained much experience and was able to use this event as an opportunity to acknowledge and improve on some of my biggest weaknesses.

Will Ramsay at the Opti Heavy Wind Regatta

Posted Jul 27, 2023
Sailors: Will Ramsay

The Opti Heavy Wind Regatta was held at St. Francis Yacht Club on June 16-18th. This was my first really windy experience, averaging between 19 - 22 knots each day. Staying in the boat became challenging with those gusts but thankfully, I was able to finish each race..some more soaked than others. Races were each about an hour long as we sailed from Alcatraz Island to the Golden Gate Bridge and back. It was a great experience with large fleets on the starting line, lots of current, and lots of wind. As we raced to the finish, “surfing" the current was a must to get that extra push ahead. Thank you for your support in helping me be a part of this awesome opportunity!
