Thank you for your support allowing me the opportunity to travel East to Florida to compete in the 2021 I420 Midwinter Championship at the US Sailing Center, Miami, Florida. This was such a great event for me. Though my results for this event are below my previous regatta results, this event provided me with an opportunity to work on my tactics, my skippering, and my overall technique. I feel so much stronger now as my results improved as the regatta continued.

I would like to thank the Newport Harbor Sailing Foundation for financially supporting my recent trip to Jensen Beach, Fl to compete in the 2021 c420 Midwinter Championship. It was an amazing experience, and I had so much fun. I was able to sail in remarkably different conditions from those of light, shifty Newport. In addition, thanks to my skipper, I got to meet some of the top sailors of the fleet, which was very exciting.

Gray Hemans at the 2020 Orange Bowl

Thank you so much for helping me race in Orange Bowl 2020. This year, I sailed as a crew for a friend of mine who lives in New York. Because of the pandemic and focusing on my studies, we weren’t able to train as much as we would like this fall. The same goes for my skipper, Amelia. This regatta was definitely a blip in my sailing results, but that doesn’t mean we wouldn’t do it again. Orange Bowl is a great regatta to compete in. The level of racing is high and it’s never cold. No matter how many times we sail Orange Bowl, we always learn something.

Morgan Pinckney at 2020 Orange Bowl Regatta

Hindsight tells us that 2020 was a weird year. Especially an odd year to run a sailing event. However Coral Reef Yacht Club went ahead and ran the annual Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta. The decision for me to travel was not made lightly. We took so many precautions to stay safe from the pandemic. Face shields, masks, distancing, testing, sanitizing - all part of our routine. Once we arrived, we lived exactly as we do here these days - staying in our apartment and only going out to a socially distanced boat yard. The Orange Bowl limited the numbers of competitors, and no one was allowed to socialize.

Reade Decker at 2020 Orange Bowl

Thank you very much for your generous support of my recent regatta in Miami FL. I thoroughly enjoyed my first experience sailing in Miami at the International Orange Bowl Regatta in the C420 Fleet. The conditions proved challenging. We experienced two days of moderate breeze and the final two days challenged the fleet with 17-20 knots of winds. I learned a lot about sailing in shifty conditions with regular gust of wind. Overall I placed 11th. though I was hoping for a better finish, I learned a lot as a sailor and definitely improved from this regatta. Thank you for helping to make this experience possible.
