Thank you so much for your generous grant to support the Mater Dei High School Sailing Team to travel to Cleveland, OH for the Mallory Fleet Racing Championships. This was the first time that Mater Dei has qualified for this event.
The team consisting of Morgan Pinckeny, Reade Decker, Chase Decker, Maxwell Kleha, Sophia Mulvania, Vera Allen and Kenney Leehealey arrived on Thursday evening ready to practice at the Foundry venue on Friday; unfortunately we received late notice that no practice would be available on Friday.
Saturday morning the team was ready to compete against 19 teams from across the United States, with three of the teams hailing from our own Newport Bay. The conditions were light for the first 6 sets and the wind began to pick up for the last two sets. During the last two sets several protests were filed leading to a long series of hearings after completion of racing. At the conclusion of the protests, Mater Dei ranked second, one point behind Antillies in first place. We went to bed with determination that we would sail strong on Sunday.
Sunday's conditions proved to be even lighter than Saturday. They attempted to begin racing the A fleet, but had to abandon the first race. The Race Committee then decided to call the regatta with no races being scored on Sunday. At the conclusion of the event, Morgan Pinckney and Kennedy Leehealey won the A division and Reade Decker and Sophia Mulvania placed 6th in the B division securing a second place finish for Mater Dei High School at their first ever appearance at the Mallory Championships.
