Jack Flores at the Rose Cup US Youth Match Race Championship
Thank you so much for making this event possible for us! The Rose Cup was the most challenging and skill building event for me in several years. I learned a great amount as this was my very first match race event, and I was new to the bow on a keelboat. With the help of our wonderful coaches, Albert Nichols and the infamous Dave Perry, we improved tremendously leading up to and throughout the event.
We fought hard in every single race, giving the top teams a run for their money a few times. We were even able to sneak in a win against the winning team in the second round robin.
Our quarterfinal found us in a match with a team we were dead even with on speed. We lost 3-1, finishing overlapped or within a boatlength in all 4 races. While it was tough to be thrown out of contention for the Gov Cup berth, we kept our heads up and won every subsequent race, placing 5th overall at the regatta.
In any case, we couldn’t have asked for a better learning experience. Thank you again for the support!
