Samantha Hemans at the 2019 C420 North Americans

Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to sail in the C420 North American Championship.  This was my first C420 regatta with my skipper and we both learned a lot.  The venue allowed us to see wind that we had not seen before.  The wind was not constant.  It was puffy and there were a lot of shifts.  Some of the issues we encountered while sailing was the fact, we kept flipping the boat due to high wind or waves hitting the boat which made me slip and fall into the water.  I became much better at changing my pins out on the water, even in 22 knots of wind.  My favorite part of this regatta was being with my family.  My dad took my sister and I two days early to practice.  The extra practice helped a lot.  My coach (Will Brown) was also my coach back east for the C420 New England regatta and he really helped me with how to use my controls correctly and how to be stable downwind.  Overall it was a great experience for me and I would love to come back again.

Gray Hemans at the 2019 C420 New England Championship

Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to sail in the 2019 C420 New England Championship.  The first day of racing was difficult as I had just taken a red eye from San Diego and got to the venue around 9am.  I had been racing in the Rose Cup in San Diego in J22s and the redeye was the only flight I could take which allowed me to race on Sunday in the Rose Cup and race on Monday in the C420 New England Championship.  The conditions for the event were light and shifty.  Day two was much better for us.  Our scores were all top 10 finishes.  There were 70 boats and in this regatta all boats started on the same line.  This made starting very challenging.  We received an OCS on the last race which was unfortunate as we would have had another top 10 finish.  Without the OCS we would have placed 10th overall.  The OCS set us back a couple places.  Overall this was a fun regatta.  Thank you again for the grant that allowed me to participate in this regatta.  It is always fun getting to travel back east.

Marbella Marlo at the 2019 C420 North Americans

This past July, Jeffrey Petersen and I competed at the 2019 c420 North American Championship at St. Francis Yacht Club. Although it was our first large scale c420 event together, because we decided to sail it a few months earlier and had only practiced a few times before, Jeffrey and I were relatively confident going into the event. I would personally like to thank Tom Ehman for graciously hosting us for the week, and our coaches Will Brown and Clinton Hayes. Jeffrey and I sailed well during the four-day event, as one of the few teams who were able to keep our boat up-right in the consistent 20+ kt wind, large swell, and ripping current. We had consistent top-ten finishes, however due to a BFD in the last race finished 12th out of the 95 boat fleet. Thank you, Newport Harbor Sailing Foundation, for your generous support!

Samantha Hemans at the 2019 C420 New England Championship

Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to sail in the 2019 C420 New England Championship and race against the best C420 teams. The hospitality of the venue was amazing, the weather was an adventure and the people were so nice. For me, going into my freshman year at Newport Harbor High School, this was a big deal because I could see my ability compared to everyone else. This regatta taught me that I could get top 15 in a race if I pushed myself hard enough  I would like to thank all of the volunteers for taking the time to help a bunch of teenagers get out on the water and sail. Without their efforts I would not have had this opportunity to learn from some of the best C420 sailors in the US. I had a lot of help from my coach (Will Brown).  Going back east I was able to sail in different (shifty) conditions. This regatta helped me get prepared for the C420 North American Championship at St. Francis Yacht Club because I was able to sail in very confusing weather conditions. My favorite part of the regatta was the practice days. Sailing with my skipper, Emma, was so much fun because we both learned a lot more and that will help the both of us in high school. Thank you again for allowing me to go on this adventurous experience.

Marbella Marlo at the 2019 US Youth Match Race Championship (Rose Cup)

This summer, I competed in the 2019 US Youth Match Race Championship (Rose Cup) at San Diego Yacht Club. Rose Cup is unarguably my favorite event of the year, as it is the only regatta where sailors of all skills (laser, high school, c420) come together and compete in a relatively even playing field. It also is one of the only youth events where sailors up to age 21 can compete. The regatta consists of two days of clinic under the direction of Dave Perry, and three days of racing. I was trimming jib for David Wood, along with crew members Max Mayol and Daniel Pegg. We ended up placing 3rd, and qualifying for the 2019 Gov Cup. Thank you for your support!

Jeffrey Petersen at the 2019 C420 North American Championship

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to compete against 93 other boats for the North American Championship of the Club 420 class. This event was an amazing, full on, and competitive 4 day event where 186 of the best sailors in North America came together to race on San Francisco Bay in 20 knots of wind and 3 knots of current. What a combination. My crew was Newport Harbor Yacht Club’s Marbella Marlo, and we finished 12th out of 93, after a not so great last day. This event was split into two rounds, round one was 2 days of qualifying and round 2 was two days of championship racing. For qualifying, Marbella and I sailed in mixed fleets against a random selection of 46 boats, to earn a score line low enough to make the Gold fleet. We had a great qualifying run winning one race, and having several top 10 finishes and qualified into Gold in 8th place, only 12 points out of third carrying our scores from the qualifying series. We were super stoked, for a team that has had a small amount of time in the boats together, we were sailing like a well oiled machine. Unfortunately our Championship scores were not as good as our qualifying run, and we fell 4 places over the course of the last two days. We still had an incredible event, and learned so much about sailing in the bay and managing a big fleet in shift and tide controlled environments.
