Scott Mais at the 2022 Hinman US Team Race Nationals

Sailors: Scott Mais

Thank you so much for your support of my competing in the Hinman (US Team Race Nationals). The event was held in Norfolk, VA, and was the largest team race regatta ever held in the US with 30 teams. Our team consisted of all current Georgetown sailors including myself and fellow NHYC member Wills Cook. The regatta was a Swiss-league format so we raced a variety of teams over 3 days ranging from current college teams, to recent alumni, to teams made up of Hinman veterans. It was quite the weekend and once the dust had settled we ended up finishing in 10th place barely missing out on the quarter-finals. Overall, I had a blast this weekend competing against the best team racers in the nation, and want to thank the Foundation again for their support.

Newport Harbor Yacht Club at the Lee Trophy

Posted Nov 01, 2022
Sailors:

Team NHYC had a great weekend at the Lee Family Trophy in Oyster Bay on Long Island in early October. Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club annually hosts a 3v3 team race in Sonars and this year was particularly enjoyable with the warm weather and fall foliage. As a team, we qualified for the final four after two competitive round robins in 8-10 knots over the course of two days. The highlight of the regatta for me was hearing from Bruce Lee speak to the teams about how it is not about the sailing, but about the people and friendships that you develop through the sport of sailing that stick with us forever. We are very grateful for the foundation's support and lucky to surround ourselves with amazing sailors and friends as we enjoy being on the water together.

Thank you for the generous grant to support the Mater Dei High School Sailing Team for the 2022-2023 season.

Our team is off to a great start as we just won the 2022 Sea Otter Regatta, qualified two sailors to compete in the Cressy, Single-Handed National Championship, won the SoCal #1, and won the 2022 Keel Boat Challenge held at SDYC. Next on the schedule is the Girls Invitational Regatta at MBYC where we will have one team competing.

We continue to practice three times a week, honing our skills and building our teamwork, with our eyes on the 2023 Mallory and 2023 Baker Cups.

Chase Decker at the C420 South Shore Championships

Thank you for your grant to support my travel to the C420 South Shore Regatta. This was my second time attending this event and again the conditions did not disappoint. Three days of racing provided consistent winds ranging from 11-17 knots. The fleet was challenging with over 70 boats competing. With strong breeze and choppy water, our teamwork produced a 5th place finish overall at the regatta rounding out our first summer for Ashtyn Tierney and me as a team.

Chase Decker at the 2022 C420 North Americans

Thank you for your generous funding that allowed me to travel to Fort Ontario, Canada to race in the C420 North American Championships at the Buffalo Canoe Club. While I had fun with teammates spending a week in Canada, the event did not go as well as I would have liked.  The conditions proved very challenging, with light wind for the two practice days and then strong winds and chop throughout the event.  One day we saw gusts of 25 knots with steep six-foot chop. The conditions were extremely challenging for the four days of racing. I look forward to a better showing next year.
