Will Ramsay at the Bic O’Pen Skiff North Americans

Thank you very much for supporting my trip down to Mission Bay to compete in my first Bic O’Penn Skiff Regatta. This “unregatta” is known for fun and it was definitely that…unless being taken out by the Tower of Doom! On the first day, the weather was sunny and perfect with wind conditions around 10 knots. This lasted all weekend, expect for Saturday, when the wind died down and we got to practice our light wind sailing tactics. With 85 boats on the starting line, it was a great opportunity to practice within a large fleet. Skippers traveled as far as Thailand and New Zealand to compete for 3 days. The Bic maneuvers much more quickly than any other boat I have sailed and it was fun practicing this against my fellow sailors. Whether flipping at the starting line, standing for a leg of the race, or catching my mast and dragging the tower of doom with me, I learned a lot and was able to finish 1st in the 12U division.

Maddie Nichols at the ILCA Midwinters East

Thank you so much for supporting my trip to Clearwater, Florida to compete in the Midwinters East Regatta. Over the four days of the regatta, numerous condition changes arose making
each day crucial to perform.

On the first day, the wind speed was around 10 knots with overall puffy and inconsistent conditions until midday, when the wind shut off to around 7 knots with more consistency and steadiness. In these light conditions, keeping the boat going for each of the 3 races and always staying towards the pressure was critical. For the second day, the wind began as a steadier breeze of around 11 knots, with it slowly building as the day progressed. During these 3 races, I learned the importance of staying consistent in my results and routine on steady days so that there is more room for inconsistency on shiftier days. The third day brought light wind which resulted in multiple postponements and race abandonments, with only 2 races. On the last day, the wind was extremely light which led to a three hour postponement followed by one race. Sadly, I was black flagged for the first time in an ILCA race, which ended my regatta early while also instilling the lesson to not expose myself too early on a start and to stay hidden when necessary.

Overall, this regatta brought a multitude of learnings with the presence of a variety of conditions over the four days which led to my ultimate finish of 28 out of 46 in the fleet. Thanks again for your support!

I’d like to thank you for the support given to us at the C420 Midwinters at Jensen Beach, Florida. As one of the only eight graders, I was very excited to compete with the best at my first big 420 event. The first day of the competition was the windiest: around 18 knots when we arrived for rigging. However the race committees postponed the race until it died down to more manageable conditions. We ended up sailing in around 13 knots and completed all of the 3 races that day. The second day of the regatta had more favorable conditions for our size and experience: about 6-8 knots on the water. That day we did better and more consistent, with two top 10 finishes. Unfortunately the third day of sailing was canceled do to pretty much no wind in the venue. Even though we did not reach our goal of making the gold fleet, this regatta was a great learning experience and thank you so much for your generous support!

Club 420 Midwinters had 120 boats competing in two varieties of winds. It was supposed to be a three-day regatta, but we did not get any racing on Monday for the Championship round since there was little to no wind. On the first day we had 20-25+ knots of wind with consistent chop and wind staying consistent throughout the race day. Sam Hemans and I had a decent first day with all top 10 finishes in our races, our first day fleet was very competitive. The second day there was a lot less wind, it consisted of 5-10 knots and favorable weather. We were placed in a new fleet and our goal was to try for top 5 finishes. We had a good day finishing 4,8,5,5. This was my first time Sailing at Midwinters, and we ended up in 16th overall, the scores were all very tight with 5th place just 12 points in front of us. Thank you so much for funding me and allowing me to compete at such a high level.

Thank you so much for your continued support of my sailing campaigns! I really appreciate your generosity and consideration in allowing me to travel to Jensen Beach, FL to compete in the 2023 C420 Midwinter Championship. After three days but only two days of racing, my crew, Dillon, and I placed 2nd out of 120 teams - one of our best events yet.

Thank you so much for the opportunities I have received from sailing the c420 midwinters in jenson beach Florida at the us sailing center Martin county. Day 1 was a windy day from the start blowing 25 as we were rigging. Was later postponed and we got on the water around 12 where it was a much more manageable 15-18. Day 2 was very lite the whole day and was very unstable. In parts I was flat wiring and in others I was sitting on the centerboard trunk. Day 3 was postponed indefinitely and awards carried that at around 2. Overall a really fun regatta and looking forward to the summer circuit.also wear sunscreen trust me!
