Dylan Sih at the 2023 US Youth Match Racing Championship for the Rose Cup

Thank you so much for your continued support which has allowed me to travel to Sheboygan, WI to compete in the 2023 US Youth Match Racing Championship for the Rose Cup. After two days of training and three days of racing in a large variety of conditions, our team – Sophia Pearse (jib), Tyler Wood (bow), Dillon Garcia (main), and myself – ended up placing 6th out of 10 teams.

The first day of racing gave us flat water but very light winds, to the extent that we had to abandon our first match mid start and postpone all racing. Nonetheless, we stayed focused, and after racing resumed, we started off strong with a win against Morgan Pinckney, the defending champion who would go on to become the number one seed after the first round robin. However, due to uncooperative conditions, we were only able to get one more flight off - in which we had a bye - before calling it a day.

This May, NHYC sent a team consisting of Charlie Welsh, Tori Thompson, Bill Menninger, Doug Rastello, Mandy McDonnell, Tyler Macdonald, Sally Mace, and myself [Andrew Person] to the Cumberland Cup in London. This edition of the Cumberland Cup was a 2 on 2 team race held on the Queen Mary Reservoir in Royal Thames YC’s brand new fleet of Sonars. The boats were so new that some of us helped install parts of the rigging prior to taking them out for their maiden voyages. The Cumberland Cup was first held in 1775, so it was incredible to be a part of the 248th anniversary of the event.

Tate Christopher at the 2023 C420 Midwinters

First, I would like to thank the Newport Harbor Sailing Foundation for supporting me in my sailing in the past. I had a great time at the C420 Midwinter Championship. The weather was super nice and c420 Midwinters is always one of my favorite 420 regattas. Although my results were not as I hoped, I still learned a lot and had a lot of fun with all of my friends. The racing was very tricky, and very shifty with a variety of conditions. The first day was very windy, up to 20 knots of breeze. I always do well in the wind and this was my best day. I was in fifth overall. The second day was light to medium breeze with very hard conditions that did not quite go my way, but I was still hoping to turn it around with a good last day. Unfortunately, the last day we didn’t have any wind and racing was canceled. I still had a lot of fun at this regatta and I could not have done it without my crew Taylor Bartell. I can't wait to keep competing this summer, thank you!

It as that one weekend I had the best time of my life sailing. There were some parts I was competitive and some times it was about having fun and making friends. Some parts were bad and some good. This is a regatta of fun.

My friends Will, Piersen, Jack and Colin all did very well. We all had a great time. All we had was fun that weekend. The course was also fun.

Siena Nichols at the 2023 ILCA Midwinters East

Thank you, Newport Harbor Sailing Foundation, for the support to the ILCA Midwinters East. This trip for me to Clearwater, FL, was one of the best that I have been able to experience so far.  The sailing venue was great with a beach launch and had conditions ranging from no wind at all with races being postponed to some races having a good solid offshore breeze. It was a great place to race in a big ILCA 4 fleet with about 45 other boats, and I am very happy to have experienced it.
