Thank you to the Newport Harbor Sailing Foundation for helping support my sailing at the 2025 C420 US National Championship. This year, the regatta was on July 22-24. It was hosted by Hyannis Yacht Club on Cape Cod. My skipper, Carly Kieding, and I flew in on July 20 for one day of practice before the regatta. The weather was in the seventies, so warm but not hot. On the practice day, we started with speed testing with our small training groups and ended with two practice races with our entire team. The wind built as the day progressed, and by the end, it was around 18 knots. The first two days of the regatta were flight selection, and the race committee split everybody up into two fleets: yellow and blue. The first day was light, and we started with an on-land postponement. Eventually, the wind built enough for the race committee to send us out. We only completed one race that day, and it was very light, shifty, and weird. We had a rough start but were able to climb back a lot and finish in second. On the second race day, it was marginal trapezing conditions, which is our best conditions. We sailed consistently well, placing sixth, sixth, second, and first in the four races we did. This put us in third going into the last day by one point and first without a throwout. The last day was the championship day where everybody was split into gold and silver. It was significantly windier than all of the other days with around 20-23 knots. We struggled with tactics that day, always finding ourselves on the wrong side of the course. Unfortunately, we sailed three pretty bad races. Overall, we finished eighth out of 148 boats. We were a little disappointed because last year we got fifth at nationals, but we were still happy with how we sailed the first two days. I learned so much from this amazing experience, which the Newport Harbor Sailing Foundation made possible. Thank you so much for your support!
