C420 New England Champs Results
C420 Mid Atlantic Champs Results
I spent most of this past summer on the East Coast, competing in the Club 420 Association’s circuit. For four of the five regattas I competed in, I teamed up with a sailor from Darien, Connecticut. Before the first regatta, I spent a week training with him along with many other boats at Tom’s River Yacht Club in New Jersey. During that time I stayed with a family who hosted many of us who were from out of the area. It was a fun way to get to know some of my fellow competitors better. The first event we competed in was the Mid Atlantic Championship, hosted by Seaside Park Yacht Club in the Jersey Shore. This regatta took place during a massive heat wave on June 24-25. Not only was it incredibly hot and humid during the regatta, but the typical strong sea breeze they usually have in that location was missing. So unfortunately the regatta was full of postponements and not a ton of racing. But the organizers did their best with the conditions. We did manage four races over two days. My partner and I finished 8th out of 44 boats, which felt like a good warm up for the summer.
Our next regatta was the New England Championship which took place in Newport, Rhode Island the last weekend in June. Again the conditions weren’t exactly as expected. The first day was very foggy and the wind wasn’t amazing, but we did get through four races on the first day. The second day the sun came out, but did not bring the wind with it. We only managed one race that day, and we finished this regatta 11th out of 79 boats. Although the conditions weren’t the best, it was fun being in Newport and getting to sightsee a little in addition to sailing.
After a short break at home, I headed back to the East Coast for our next event, which was C420 Nationals, hosted by Hyannis Yacht Club. This was my first time on Cape Cod and it was such a fun area to explore. The first day of racing was pretty light and shifty, which we were promised was not normal. The breeze picked up for the second and third days of racing, and racing was pretty intense. We ended up finishing in 11th again at this race, out of 148 boats.
After Hyannis, we had a few days until the next event, which was the CJ Buckley Regatta (C420 Team Race Nationals) in East Greenwich, Rhode Island. We spent the two days before practicing in New London, CT. I sailed with my former partner (Noah Stapleton) for one last regatta before he headed off to college, and it was good to have a little time to refresh/warm up before racing began.
Our three-boat team for CJ was ⅔ West Coast sailors and ⅓ East Coast sailors, but we kept our name from the previous year - West Coast Best Coast. We ended up having the regatta of the summer and managed to win the regatta without losing a single race! Going undefeated and defending our championship was a fun way to wrap up a great partnership.
The final regatta my East Coast partner and I competed in was C420 North Americans hosted by Sayville Yacht Club on Long Island. This was a long regatta to end the summer, but the conditions were pretty consistent every day, and we had an excellent first day of qualifying, ending the day in 2nd place. Over the next day of qualifying and the two days of finals, we
managed to maintain our consistency and finished in fourth. It was great to end to the summer and my East Coast - West Coast partnership on such a good note!
I am so grateful to the Newport Harbor Sailing Foundation for the generous support I have received over the last couple of years, and this summer was no exception. Your funding has helped make it possible for me to compete in many regattas around the country - having amazing experiences, making lifelong friends
