This summer, I competed in the 2019 US Youth Match Race Championship (Rose Cup) at San Diego Yacht Club. Rose Cup is unarguably my favorite event of the year, as it is the only regatta where sailors of all skills (laser, high school, c420) come together and compete in a relatively even playing field. It also is one of the only youth events where sailors up to age 21 can compete. The regatta consists of two days of clinic under the direction of Dave Perry, and three days of racing. I was trimming jib for David Wood, along with crew members Max Mayol and Daniel Pegg. We ended up placing 3rd, and qualifying for the 2019 Gov Cup. Thank you for your support!

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to compete against 93 other boats for the North American Championship of the Club 420 class. This event was an amazing, full on, and competitive 4 day event where 186 of the best sailors in North America came together to race on San Francisco Bay in 20 knots of wind and 3 knots of current. What a combination. My crew was Newport Harbor Yacht Club’s Marbella Marlo, and we finished 12th out of 93, after a not so great last day. This event was split into two rounds, round one was 2 days of qualifying and round 2 was two days of championship racing. For qualifying, Marbella and I sailed in mixed fleets against a random selection of 46 boats, to earn a score line low enough to make the Gold fleet. We had a great qualifying run winning one race, and having several top 10 finishes and qualified into Gold in 8th place, only 12 points out of third carrying our scores from the qualifying series. We were super stoked, for a team that has had a small amount of time in the boats together, we were sailing like a well oiled machine. Unfortunately our Championship scores were not as good as our qualifying run, and we fell 4 places over the course of the last two days. We still had an incredible event, and learned so much about sailing in the bay and managing a big fleet in shift and tide controlled environments.

The Warren Jones International Youth Match Racing Championship is an event hosted jointly between the Royal Perth Yacht Club, the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club, and Swan River Sailing, in Perth Waters, Western Australia. Being one of the most prestigious, difficult, and intense youth match racing events in the world, my team and I were super excited to have been invited to race in this event. Among the competitors list of under 25 sailors, were names like Will Boulden, Harry Price, Nick Engot-Johnson, Tom Grimes, and Matt Whitfield, all of whom are ranked inside the top 30 in the Open World Match Race Rankings. One of the most difficult things about this event is the travel to and from the event. We had to travel over 25 hours to get to Perth, but once we had arrived, we understood why it is one of the most legendary sailing venues in all of sailing. Every day was over 80 degrees, sunny, and had great breeze ranging from 8-16 knots.

I am just back from the Orange Bowl Regatta at the Coral Reef Yacht Club. I am so appreciative of the Foundation's support, because I could not participate in this kind of an event without this assistance.

This year my crew Nathan and I spent plenty of time preparing for the Orange Bowl Youth International Regatta in Miami, Florida. Every year, hundreds of boats come to Miami to compete in multiple different classes. This year was my third Orange Bowl: I did my first in the 29’er and the other in the C420. Last year Nathan and I finished fifth, so this year we were hopeful of a better finish.
Nathan and I spent the months leading up to Orange Bowl only racing in high school events and Lasers, so we needed a lot of practice to get used to the 420 again. We started by using the Perry 2 event in Coronado as a training event. The event helped us get in the saddle again, but we were not fully prepared, so we flew out to Miami a week early to train with the Coral Reef team.

Thank you so much for contributing and enabling me to sail the c420 circuit this summer, which included the c420 US Nationals in Long Beach, New Jersey, the US Junior Women’s Doublehanded Championship in Mentor, Ohio, and the c420 North American Championship in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts. I had an amazing time traveling through the midwest and east coast and made so many memories with the coaches and sailors at each event.
