About the Newport Harbor Sailing Foundation

GRANT REQUESTS

Our grants are designed to promote sailing, sailboat racing, maritime education and to help fund deserving organizations. The grants help fund travel expenses to out of town events, charter fees, coaching fees and entry fees. Most grant applications are submitted for a particular event (ex. i420 Nationals), but we also provide funding assistance to high level clinics as well. All applications are reviewed by the Grant Committee.

The Grant Committee is actively seeking ways to introduce new kids to sailing, and helps those junior sailors get to the next level. The Committee also supports those sailors who stand out, and ultimately seek National, World or Olympic Titles. It reviews all new grant requests on their merit, their priority, and how the grant might contribute to the sailors’ or organization’s future success.

GRANT PRIORITIES

  1. Active Olympic Campaigns
  2. Junior sailors – supporting competition at National and International events
  3. All US Sailing Youth Championship Events
  4. High School Sailing Programs – local programs designed to promote and strengthen local youth sailors
  5. Match Race and Team Race events for competitive adults
  6. High Performance/High Level Clinics

At the end of each year, the Grant Committee reviews the grant priorities of the prior year, the approved grants, and how those approved grants fit into the grant priorities. Afterwards, the whole Foundation re-evaluates the grant priorities for the coming year. Consistent with our Mission Statement, the Foundation focuses on Newport Bay area sailors and their successes, though it will also consider funding outside individuals and organizations showing potential.

PROCESS

The Foundation Grant Committee meets quarterly to consider grant applications that have been received during the preceding three months.

Within two weeks of our quarterly meetings, the Grant Committee will respond to each applicant. If a grant is approved, our grant administrator will reply with a proposed grant agreement and a check for the amount of the grant. Other related administrative matters will be handled via email.

Each grant recipient must agree to use the funds only for the purposes described in the application, to return any funds not expended, to submit receipts and/or documentation supporting budgeted expenditures, and to submit a brief report at the conclusion of the project, including photos, if available. The Foundation will feature grantees on the website and include updates as provided by the grantee.
