Newport Harbor High School's sailing team was honored to receive a national invite to the Phebe Corckran King Memorial regatta, based on their performance in the 2024-2025 season. The high school team was beyond excited to receive the invite and even more thrilled with the opportunity to sail on the national level.
Being true student athletes there was concern with the event falling on the weekend before finals week. But our sailors were committed as both students and athletes and "made it work" while keeping their grades up. Some of the sailors who attended this regatta even finished the year with straight A's and 5's on their AP tests!
The regatta was a wonderful experience for our sailing team. Seeing and experiencing a new venue with high winds, rain, and huge wind shifts gave our sailors a new perspective and understanding of tricky race conditions that they do not normally see on the West Coast. Newport Harbor battled their way up from 14th and finished with an impressive 4th overall with the help of two bullets and ten top 5 finishes. It goes to show how tight the competition was for the 18 teams that raced.
Without the Newport Harbor Sailing Foundation's support, there is no doubt that several of our sailors would not have been able to attend and as a result, our team would not have done as well as it did. These young sailors experienced a new venue (Tom’s River Yacht Club in New Jersey) and competed against high caliber sailors from the East Coast.
The memories made at this regatta could never be replicated and there is no doubt our sailors have gained more confidence in their abilities as a result of going outside their comfort zone. Thank you Newport Harbor Sailing Foundation!
