Charlie Welsh at the 2023 U.S. Adult Championship
Thank you for your incredible support over the last few years., which enabled Scott Rasmussen and I to participate in the 2023 U.S. Adult Championship in Macatawa, Michigan. Your support was vital to our participation and success, and I want to share a recap of the event with you.The regatta featured seven teams from six US Sailing Regional Sailing Associations competing for the Clifford D. Mallory Trophy. Adding our names alongside previous winners such as Bruce Ullman and Buddy Melges is an honor.
The event began under challenging conditions with winds exceeding the race maximum, demanding excellent boat handling and strategy. We had some challengers the first day with some basic boat handling techniques but swiftly worked through those. In subsequent races, we dialed in our boat handling and tactical decisions. Our strategy paid off, and we were consistently among the leaders.
Gale-force winds and significant waves led to the cancellation of races on the third day, giving us a brief pause and a chance to explore Holland, Michigan. When conditions improved slightly on the final day, we faced fluctuating winds that tested our adaptability.
In the final race, we were leading significantly. However, as the winds intensified unexpectedly, the race committee called off the race, and our wind was solidified. Thank you for your support, for this event. This achievement was not just a test of our sailing skills but a testament to the perseverance and teamwork that you have always encouraged.
Looking ahead, we are eager to continue our journey in VX One Sailing. Your support will undoubtedly propel us to new heights, and we look forward to sharing more of our adventures with you.
