CDMHS at the 2017 ISSA Keelboat Nationals

Posted Dec 05, 2017

Thank you so much for funding my trip to Saint Petersburg, Florida, to compete at the ISSA High School Keelboat Nationals this past week. The regatta consisted of three days of sailing, including one practice day and two race days. I was very lucky to be a part of the CDM Keelboat Team. Usually, girls are unable to be on the keelboat team because the qualifying round overlaps with the ISSA All Girls Regatta, however this year, another crew member was unable to attend the nationals in Florida because he was competing in another regatta.

Newport Harbor High School also sent a team, including Scott Mais, Joseph and Erik Hou, and Reid Wiley. The first of 10 races was abandoned early Saturday morning and racing was not resumed until 1500 that day when the wind shifted from the northeast to southwest. Four races were able to be completed in 4 - 5 knots of shifty conditions with the fleet returning to the dock just prior to sunset. The breeze was much more favorable for the final day of racing as a result of a system passing to the north. Race 5 was started in 10 - 14 knots of breeze from the southwest. Races 6 through 8 saw a building breeze up to 16 - 20 knots as the front approached. Frontal passage occurred during race 9 marked by a band of rain. After the rain, the winds lightened considerably for the final race of the series. Winning the final race, we battled for a 2 nd overall finish, but ended up in 3rd place by just 1 point when the boat we had to beat caught up by a considerable amount and finished the race in second.

Being my first J70 regatta, I was very happy with our performance, and I am excited to continue sailing keelboats. CDM finished in 3rd place, and Newport Harbor in 4th. Thank you!
