2018 C420 North Americans Results
Thank you so much for contributing and enabling me to sail the c420 circuit this summer, which included the c420 US Nationals in Long Beach, New Jersey, the US Junior Women’s Doublehanded Championship in Mentor, Ohio, and the c420 North American Championship in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts. I had an amazing time traveling through the midwest and east coast and made so many memories with the coaches and sailors at each event.
Starting with the US Nationals in New Jersey, Gray Hemans (my skipper) and I were pleasantly surprised with the weather and strong breeze for the first couple of days and were able to perform to the best of our abilities. Although we did not end up as well as we wanted to, ending up 33rd out of the 146 boats, we learned a lot from our coaches from the Christchurch Sailing Team, Isaac Clark and Kieran O’Connell.
Our next event was the US Junior Women’s Doublehanded Championship, which is probably one of my favorite events to sail. This year it was held at Mentor Yacht Club in Mentor, Ohio, and Gray and I placed 9th out of the 40 boats. We are a little disappointed with this result because we were in fifth place overall going into the last race, but due to an incident with one of the judges, we were disqualified and pushed back to ninth. The US Junior Women’s Doublehanded Championship, or Ida Lewis, is a US Sailing sponsored all girls event, which means the first two days are spent with the coaches provided by the regatta committee and the last three are spent racing. After each day of sailing, the regatta committee plans activities and
trips were we have the opportunity to make friendships with girls from all around the country.
Our last event was the C420 North American Championship in New Bedford, Massachusetts, and I could safely say this was my favorite regatta of the summer. Gray and I had the privilege to stay at Steve Benjamin’s (1978 College Sailor of the Year, 1984 Olympic Silver Medalist in the 470, 2015 US Sailing Yachtsman of the Year) home in Jamestown Rhode Island, which while it was a long commute to the venue every day, was worth it to stay in a nice home with such an accomplished host family. The conditions were amazing, with winds blowing up to 25 kts the first two days. On the third day, there were warnings for squalls and storms and we were unable to sail, however, and Gray and I spent our downtime doing touristy things in Newport, Rhode Island. We ended the regatta in 33rd out of the 176 boats and as the third all girls team. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to sail these events this summer, and I look forward to any sailing in the future.
